From the very beginning of the summer, Elena has been counting down the days to this one very special week. Not because it’s Eli’s birthday week (although that is a very big deal). Not because the Indiana State Fair starts on Friday (also a very big deal). Nope. This week was the end-all, be-all of camps: Girls Rock! Indy.
If Elena could come up with a dream camp for her music-loving self, it would be Girls Rock! Indy. It’s as if they read her little mind. For the entire week, she’s surrounded by rock-and-roll awesomeness. She’s forming a band, creating an original song, and learning how to play the bass. Every day starts with a dance party. When they’re not immersed in all things musical, they’re learning how to make their own zines and silk screen t-shirts. In between all that crazy fun stuff, the volunteers that these girls look up to are talking to them about conflict resolution and body image.
The week culminates in one very special showcase. On Saturday, August 6 the girls will perform their original song on stage at the Anthenaeum in downtown Indianapolis. Elena is so excited to rock the stage with her new band, Cool Ice. If you’re local and you’re looking for something fun to do on Saturday, consider coming out to the Showcase and supporting these young girls and their rock-and-roll dreams. Then someday, when your friends ask if you’ve seen the newest, hippest thing in music you can say, “That girl? Oh, yeah, I saw her way back when . . . “
