Whenever I start to dream about what we would do with an influx of extra money, I always dream of the beach. I don't dream about a bigger, fancier house, a shiny new car, or a closet full of shoes. I dream about a sweet little cottage, our dumpy van parked outside, with a closet full of flip-flops. Something along the lines of this:
Every year I head down to the beaches of South Walton with my girlfriends. Along the sweet little road that is 30-A, there are the cottages of my dreams. Porches with rocking chairs that overlook the ocean. Beadboard and pastels, sea oats and starfish.
My dream vacation isn't particularly glamourous or adventurous. Can it ever be with young children? The glamour lies in getting there without some sort of bodily fluid on your clothing. The adventure is getting there in one piece without emotionally scarring your children for life.
No, I'd like the same dream repeated over and over again with each passing year. A little house we can call our own, a place we visit year after year. I'd love for my kids to get to know the same stretch of coast like the backs of their hands. I'd love to load up our van with bikes and buckets, towels and tankinis, sunscreen and strappy sandals. We'd know exactly where to stop along the way, because we've made this trip a hundred times before. Sometimes we'd invite friends and family along to live in our dream, other times we'd wrap our family in that little cottage like a cocoon. Every once in awhile Mike and I would escape for a long weekend of our own, napping on the beach with fingers interlaced. Somedays, that dream vacation is so close I can feel it with all my senses. It's balmy. It smells of salt and coconuts and it tastes like a fresh margarita. It's pretty much heaven on earth.
What's your dream vacation? Simple or over-the-top, I'd love to hear.

Gotta love the beach! But for a dream vacation…. I’d have to go to Europe. Haven’t been since, um, about 15 year ago. I’d love to spend more time in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland. So much to do and see. I could go on and on.
