This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to the winner, Lesley!
In compensation for reviewing this book, I was given one copy of the book for myself and one copy to give away. All opinions are expressly my own.
Did you know that today is Geek Pride Day? Even if you didn't, I bet there's a geek out there that you know and love. And chances are, that special geek of yours might even be a dad.
If there just happens to be a guy like that in your life, then you'll appreciate the newest offering from the editor of Wired's GeekDad blog, Ken Denmead: The Geek Dad's Guide to Weekend Fun.
I reviewed Ken's first book, Geek Dad, last summer. His newest book is just as cool as the first one, but with an emphasis on projects that can be done in a weekend (or less). As you can see, we've marked a lot of projects out of this book for our family to try, including:
- Make Up Your Own Combat Card Game - Use a standard deck of cards, art materials you have lying around, and your own creativity to come up with a Role Playing Game for all ages.
- Pun Wars - For those of us who tend toward the wordy kind of geekiness.
- Backyard Zip Line - Otherwise known as a Project Give Eli More Scars, but too fun to pass up.
- Dry Ice Ice Cream - A science project you can eat? Yes, please.
- Alien Drums - Using PVC pipe to build a set of tuned drums. Noise + Construction = Happy Kids.
- Create Stop-Motion Movies - Fulfilling Elena's dream to use my camera and tripod for good, not evil.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, but I think this one is much better. I found that many of the projects in the first book were either too complicated for us (we're pretty novice geeks), or too complicated for Elena and Eli. This book has a wide variety of projects for all ages, abilities, and interests. Even toddlers could get involved with projects like Geeky Art Prints (creating art with shaving cream and food coloring).
Thanks to Gotham Books and Ken Denmead, I have a copy of the book to give away! The lucky winner will have the book in their hands in time for Father's Day, perfect timing for the Geek Dad in your life.
Giveaway Details
The Prize:
- One winner will receive a copy of Ken Denmead's book, The Geek Dad's Guide to Weekend Fun.
To Enter:
- Leave a comment telling me about what makes your inner geek come out, and how you try to share it with your kids. For me, it's food and cooking. I often launch into geeky explanations of food science as I'm cooking or baking with the kids. They'll usually humor me and listen along, especially if it means extra licks of the batter.
Extra Entries:
- Share a link to this giveaway on Facebook or Twitter. Tell me that you did so as a separate comment.
- "Like" Just Like The Number on Facebook. Tell me that you did so as a separate comment.
Fine Print:
- Giveaway ends at midnight ET on Monday, May 30, 2011.
- Winner will be notified via e-mail and given one week to respond.
Thanks and good luck!

Yay! A giveaway! The book sounds cool. My inner geek comes out when on a Friday night and the kids are in bed and my hubby and I are watching Human Planet on Discovery. Yep. It’s a very cool show though!

Would LOVE to win a copy of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the first. I have a great time playing with Legos with the boys, and try to involve them in the cooking whenever they show interest.
