I Can Still Hear the Music

The girls of ACL 2011

I spent three heavenly days last week in Austin, Texas.  The occasion?  Celebrating a certain monumental birthday (I’m not giving away ages – it’s tacky!) of my sister, Suzan, at Austin City Limits Music Festival.  Along for the ride were my other sister, Ana, and Suzan’s dear friend, Melissa (who I vote in as an honorary sister – I absolutely adore her).

For three days I wasn’t a mother, or a wife, or a PTO president . . . I was just Angie, having a good time.  A really, really good time.  Bonnaroo, anyone?

I could write paragraphs about the experience, but I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves and keep the highlights minimal.

The Food: Oh my goodness, the food.  At one point I tweeted that I wanted to marry Texas food and have its babies.  My first In-N-Out burger, migas, real tortillas that actually taste like something and are pliable, Mighty Cones with fried avocados, inhaling a bean burrito in the Chuy’s parking lot, and honest-to-goodness kolaches that don’t come from a factory.  I’m sorry, was I at a music festival or a food festival?

The Drink: What’s not to love about a music festival with a craft beer tent?  My favorite beer of the weekend was ZiegenBock.  A nice, refreshing brew that you can drink all day long in the hot sun.  I should know.  Also?  Still detoxing four days later.  Did I  mention I had fun?

And Finally, the Music:

Favorite Band I’d Never Heard of Before: The Secret Sisters.  Old-timey country from two sassy sisters hailing from Muscle Shoals, Alabama.  They won’t be a secret for long.

Sexiest Musician: Ray LaMontagne, even when he sports the Amish look.

Band I’d Love to See Again: Foster the People.  This one was way crowded, so we were all the way in the back.  Fun, upbeat tunes, and from what I could see they were having a blast.  Who wants to take me to their sold out show in Indy?

Toughest Decision Ever: Coldplay or Kanye?  Yes, they were playing at the same time.  Chris Martin won out, as Coldplay is my favorite band ever.  They wrapped up about 20 minutes before Kanye was done, and he was killing it at the end: “Jesus Walks,” “All of the Lights” and “Stronger.”

The One That Gave Me Goosebumps: Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings.  Why have I never listened before?

My plane might have landed Monday, but I’m still in the clouds.

I always get tortillas from the Mexican food stores in Indy because they actually do taste like a tortilla is supposed to taste. I do hate going to those stores, though. Hello uncomfortable!
